Plant and harvest your crops for six years, but let the land be renewed and lie uncultivated during the seventh year. Then let the poor among you harvest whatever grows on its own. Leave the rest for wild animals to eat. The same applies to your vineyards and olive groves.
(Exodus 23:10-11 NLT)
You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working. This gives your ox and your donkey a chance to rest. It also allows your slaves and the foreigners living among you to be refreshed.
(Exodus 23:12 NLT)
In the Bible, the Lord commanded a time of rest. There are six days for working and one day of resting. Most Americans want to work four or five days and rest two or three days, the Lord said six days to work and one day to rest. Nonetheless, the day of rest is important! Not only is there a day of rest but there is a year of rest every seven years in the word of God. This would be a time of recuperation and refreshing according to the Bible. One of the reasons that God commanded fasting in the Bible is because our bodies and digestive systems need time to rest and be refreshed. According to statistics, Americans consume 4 pounds of preservatives, coloring, stabilizers, flavorings, and other additives each year! Our bodies need a rest! It is amazing how medical science is coming behind the word of God. Long-life specialists say that intermittent fasting is essential for long life on the earth. If you were to travel to some Asian countries, you would see many older people driving and riding bikes at nearly 100 years of age. How is this so? Many religions of the world participate in fasting. Even though they do not reap the spiritual reward of fasting, they are reaping the natural reward of systematically giving the body and digestive system a time of rest and refreshing. At a certain age, the human body stops naturally producing stem cells. Fasting is the ONLY thing a person can do even in old age to naturally regenerate stem cells. God is so magnificent in his wisdom. He has been instructing fasting for thousands of years before medical science proved the natural benefits. This is a time of great spiritual reward, but also enjoy the fact that your body will reap the benefits of fasting for the year to come!
